Objective

Chapters 1-4

As the novel opens we are introduced to Frances, Josiah, and Mehuru. Frances and Josiah have committed to a business-like marriage where both of them will benefit financially, and Mehuru is committed to spreading the word to local villages about stopping the slave trade. We will discuss roles and responsibilities in the novel.

Lesson

1. Class Discussion: Discuss the time period in which the novel is set. How is the time period relevant to these particular roles and responsibilities? What are common roles and responsibilities of this time period?

2. Group Work and Discussion: Discuss the roles and responsibilities of the following characters: Frances, Josiah, Sarah and Mehuru. Next, have students rate their roles and responsibilities by level of importance; number one being most important. Have students share their results with the class.
