Ove

This character is the protagonist of the novel and is depicted as a grumpy, 59-year-old curmudgeon with strong principles and values. In the beginning of the narrative, he lost his wife six months prior and has recently been forced into early retirement by the company where he has worked for 30 years.

Sonja

This character is the deceased wife of the protagonist. In a series of flashbacks, the reader comes to learn that she was a lover of books and music and opposite her husband in many ways. After becoming paralyzed from a bus accident in Spain, she finished her studies and became a teacher for children with special needs.

Tom
