This object symbolizes extreme poverty. Malcolm recalls his shock freshman year of college when he first realized that everything Jude owned in the whole world was contained in this object. The contrast between Malcolm's adolescence and Jude's adolescence for the first time becomes clear to Malcolm at this point.

Fire Escape

This object symbolizes risky behavior and danger. When Malcolm, JB, Willem and Jude get locked onto the roof together, Jude proposes that they utilize this object in order to rectify the situation. Jude suggests that he be the one to be lowered down off the side of the building, a proposition that terrifies both the reader and Willem, since Malcolm and JB are unaware of Jude's latest close call with a self-harming incident.
