Mr. Biswas is a 46 year old native of Trinidad. He is Hindu, although he questions much of his traditional Indian culture. He and his wife, Shama, have four children.

When Mr. Biswas loses his job, Shama stays with him, and he lauds her loyalty. She industriously searches for ways to earn money.

3. What motivates Mr. Biswas to choose the house for his family?

Mr. Biswas is motivated to purchase his house by his deep desire to provide for his family. After having to rely on his in-laws for financial support, the house becomes a symbol of freedom and independence. Mr. Biswas is touched by the affection the former owner of the house has for his mother and is reminded of his own mother's struggle for survival.

4. Why does Mr. Biswas consider himself a successful man?

Although Mr. Biswas would not be considered successful by Western standards, he feels that he has achieved great success by becoming financially independent from his in-laws and providing his family with a house. Mr. Biswas is also proud of his children's intellectual independence. Two of his children earn scholarships to study abroad.
