Prologue

What makes a person successful? The prologue of the book begins at the end of Mr. Biswas' life. As he reflects on his rather mundane life, he feels a sense of pride and accomplishment. The objective of this lesson is to examine the definition of success as defined by Eastern and Western culture in the book.

Lesson

1. As a class, discuss definitions of success. Is Mr. Biswas a successful man by Western standards? Why or why not? Why might he consider himself successful?

2. Divide the students into groups of three or four. Have each group research the measurements of success in Eastern culture, particularly Indian culture. Have each group present their findings to the class.

3. Have each student reflect on the group presentations and write a summary about the differences between Eastern and Western culture's standards of success. In light of what students now know...
