Yuan escapes from his relationship with his father by going to the country alone. He escapes by going to the earthen house and enjoying his freedom. This lesson will explore a common theme in the novel--escape.

Lesson

1. Class discussion: Do you think that Yuan escape foreshadows his future in the novel? Based on the way he escapes from his father's house, what can we infer about Yuan? How do you think Yuan will develop as a result of his running away?

2. Group discussion: Divide the class into groups of four or five so they can have a discussion about escape. What are examples of escape in their personal lives? What are examples of escape in other pieces of literature? What are examples of escape on television or in movies?
