When Ethan died, Buddy felt a pain inside him much sharper than any pain he had ever felt. Two summers after Ethan's death, the pain is less, more like a stomachache, but Buddy still feels it all the time. Only sleep takes it away because then Ethan runs with him through his dreams.

2. What happens when Clarity falls into the water?

When Clarity falls into the water, Buddy lunges off the side of the dock and into the warm water. He reaches Clarity quickly and gently snags her shirt. Then he pulls her head out of the water and turns to the shore.

3. How did Buddy bring Hannah and Ethan back together?

Hannah and Ethan had been high school sweethearts, but after the fire that crippled his leg, they went their separate ways. Hannah married and had three children. After Hannah's husband died, she moved into town. One day Buddy was at the dog park, and he followed Hannah's daughter, Rachel, home. When Hannah looked at Buddy's collar, she saw Ethan's name on it. She called him, and when she saw him again, it was like they were never apart. Buddy brought them back together.
