The students will participate in a discussion about Africa in the 1960's.

Lesson

1. Teacher lecture to include: Biography of V. S. Naipaul and winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. Discuss the importance of the Nobel Prize, where it originated, how the prizes are determined, what the benefits are to the winners. discuss how the unnamed country in the novel could be any of several developing African countries in the 1960s.

2. Segue into a discussion about Africa, beginning with what the students know about the dark continent. Lead the discussion into relevant historical and political facts about Africa at that time. Identify Arab-Indian-Africans, European and American expatriates in Africa, and the tribal cultures of the continent.
