U.S. automobile production reaches 63,500 units; there are 200,000 cars on the road.

Automaker Charles Duryea estimates for Motor Magazine that as many as half of the 515 companies that were producing cars in 1900 have gone bankrupt.

The Hupp Motor Car Company of Detroit introduces the Hupmobile.

The New York-to-Paris auto race begins; it will proceed through Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco, then via sea to Tokyo, through Vladivostok, Irkutsk, Moscow, Berlin, Bonn, and Brussels. After 169 days and 13,341 miles the lone American entry, a Thomas Flyer driven by George Schuster, is the winner.
