The Village Manor House—Lives of the Nobility

The manor house was the most visible symbol of the lord's lofty status and absolute authority over the village. Often the largest stone structure in the village, the manor house served a variety of functions. It was the personal residence of the lord and his family, the place where the lord conducted business and held court, a place of entertainment for other visiting lords, and sometimes the center of various village activities.
