The Crusaders defeat Egyptian troops a few miles outside Cairo but are then forced to retreat back to Damietta, which the Egyptians forced them to surrender, ending the Seventh Crusade.
Mamluks, members of slave corps in the army, seize control of Egypt and Syria, from the Ayyubid dynasty, ruling the state until its occupation by the Ottoman Empire in 1517.
