Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was involved in a power struggle with Japanese warlords (daimyos) after the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, wins the battle of Sekigahara, defeating Konishi Yukinaga. Three years later he is appointed shogun by the emperor, thereby beginning the Tokugawa shogunate, centered in Edo (Tokyo).
