William Pierce
While several delegates to the Constitutional Convention took notes on the proceedings, William Pierce, a Georgia delegate, is one of the few who describes more than the substantive debates that transpired. William Pierce's notes include descriptions of the delegates themselves. These character sketches analyze their appearance, speaking ability, intelligence, and personal style. Most of the time, Pierce attempts to emphasize the individual's positive attributes, but he is not entirely unwilling to criticize apparent faults.
M R. [RUFUS] KING is a man much distinguished for his eloquence and great parliamentary talents. He was educated in Massachusetts and is said to have good classical as well as legal knowledge. He has served for three years in the Congress of the United States with great and deserved applause, and is at this time high in the confidence and approbation of his countrymen. This gentleman is about thirtythree years.....
