A U.S.-negotiated cease-fire between Israel and the Arab states goes into effect; peace negotiations begin at the United Nations.

Four New York-bound airliners, carrying over six hundred people, are hijacked by Palestinian terrorists. One plane is diverted to London, and three planes are flown to Jordan.
