At about 12:30 P.M. on 22 November 1963 as his motorcade passed the Texas School Book Depository in downtown Dallas, President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed, and Texas governor John Connally, who was riding in the same car, was wounded. A few hours later Dallas police arrested Lee Harvey Oswald, an employee of the depository and a former Marine sharpshooter, who shot and killed a Dallas police officer while resisting arrest. Oswald had defected to the Soviet Union but later returned to the United States and spent time promoting "fair play" for Cuba. He had threatened to blow up Dallas police headquarters if FBI agents did not stop interviewing his wife and family regarding Oswald's pro-Cuban activities.
