A 40-foot sailboat purchased from Lake Michigan could have meant a boatload of trouble for Washington's Lake Union if state inspectors hadn't collared its hitchhiking zebra mussels at Spokane.
State police inspectors at a mandatory I-70 weigh station for commercial vehicles found live zebra mussels attached to the hull even though it had been pressure washed before heading west on a truck, according to the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife.
