In algebra, X usually represents an unknown quantity. That could be why all of the bills now pending in the special legislative session, convening again on Wednesday, have an X following their number.

The stated reason for adding the X, of course, is to distinguish these bills from like-numbered measures used in the regular session. The fact is virtually all of the 15 House bills, 10 Senate measures, and two joint resolutions, remain unknown quantities after five days of consideration and numerous Senate and House votes.
