The extension of war to civilian targets in World War II opened up the 'war experience' to many women who had been previously outside of it. Women in France were also greatly involved in the Resistance movement with Simone de Beauvoir and Marguerite Duras writing important works which shaped the narrative of that period. Their writings provide a feminine perspective which is opposed to the dominant Gaullist account of the Resistance in that human pain and emotion are given full examination and not subverted to masculine notions of ultimate glory which falsify social reality.
