Henry Roth, 89, whose two much-praised autobiographical novels about childhood in an immigrant family in New York were published 60 years apart, died Oct. 13 in a hospital in Albuquerque. The cause of death could not immediately be learned. One reason Mr. Roth was hailed in literary circles was the acknowledged worth of his two evocations of the childhood of a son of turn-of-the-century immigrants. The other was his eventual triumph over the psychic demons that had appeared to silence him between books.
