Webster's dictionary defines epic as follows: "A long narrative poem about the deeds of a traditional or historical hero or heroes of high station, such as the Iliad or Odyssey, with a background of warfare and the supernatural, a dignified style, and certain formal characteristics of structure (beginning in the middle of the story, catalogue passages, invocation of the muse, etc)."
