PAYING tribute to his old friend Peter Townsend in the Daily Mail, Philip Ziegler said he was sorry that the word gentleman was out of fashion. He didn't mean that the qualities traditionally attributed to gentlemen - honour, modesty, courage, discretion and so forth - were also out of date, only that gentleman was no longer that word, presumably because of its associations with class. This is only half right. "You're a gentleman" is still a common, and I suggest perfectly serious, way of expressing thanks.
