AT ONE time or another, every democracy in the Indian subcontinent-India itself, Pakistan and Sri Lanka-has voted a woman into the top job. Now it is Bangladesh's turn. In the general election on February 27th the Bangladesh National Party, led by Begum Khaleda Zia, emerged as the largest party, with 140 of the 294 seats so far declared. Begum Khaleda, widow of Ziaur Rahman, a president killed in a coup in 1981, is expected to win another 30 seats: they are reserved for women, but indirectly elected.
