My friends were named Jim, Yannackers (a derivative of Yiannis), Kon, Bill, Luigi and Spiro. We were all wogs, but that was hardly relevant in a school where most students came from ethnic backgrounds ... I rarely see my school friends nowadays, although an occasional contact will produce a return to the adolescent argot which was such an organising principle of my relation to language and literature.
