The Princess froze like a startled deer in front of my headlights and I hit the brakes just in time to stop the car an inch away from her. It was a miracle I didn't run over her; my thoughts were not on the road but on more complicated matters, and in the dusky shadows of early evening I hadn't seen her dark figure until the last moment. The close call unnerved me, and I sat back to catch my breath. But the Princess, though still motionless in the middle of the road, seemed calm, as unruffled and self-possessed as ever.
