Civil rights and community leaders from across the country turned out as William F. Gibson, who once led the NAACP's national board of directors, was laid to rest May 6 in Greenville, S.C.
"Before he became our chairman, Dr. William Gibson was a courageous freedom fighter in South Carolina. He will be sorely missed," NAACP chairman Julian Bond said at the three-hour funeral at Springfield Baptist Church that drew about 1,000 mourners.
