There are four methods of doing bioethics in the United States today: deductivism, principlism, casuistry, and feminism.1 The word Hippocratic is not mentioned, and the Hippocratic approach to medical ethics has been neglected. But does it have value, and if so, why not allow Hippocrates (c430 BC - c377 BC) a place at the table? The purpose of this essay is to 1) describe the prejudice against the Hippocratic tradition, 2) note the value of the Hippocratic ethic, and 2) suggest a place in contemporary bioethics where Hippocrates may be friend rather than foe.
