The O'Toole report and your Aug. 10 editorial "Firehouse failure" give us pause to consider and ask, what is it that firefighters do? As president of the Boston Firefighters Union Local 718, I'd like to try to explain what we do - and do so well, according to the O'Toole report. We die for you. It's as simple as that. For that we expect to be compensated at a reasonable rate of pay, not the meager 2 percent average yearly increase over the last 10 years. Firefighters live 10 years less than the general population.
