Paper offered simplistic view of history

I was surprised at the simplistic and inaccurate headline on the front page of the Dec. 2 Crossroads section. Under "Americans have taken up arms many times to defend their land and liberties" were listed such wars as the Indian Wars, the Mexican War, the Spanish- American War and the Vietnam War.
Is editors' sense of history so blinded by the current wave of jingoism that they actually believe the Indian Wars between 1817 and 1898 defended "land and liberties"? In my reading of history, the purpose of those wars was to ...
