Medical disorders caused by a lack of vitamin A are rare in the United States, but in many countries a severe deficiency of this key vitamin exacts a significant toll on health. Loss of eyesight is a major hazard. The World Health Organization estimates that half of the children in Africa, Asia and Latin America are permanently blinded each year from lack of vitamin A.
