Medical disorders caused by a lack of vitamin A are rare in the United States, but in many countries a severe deficiency of this key vitamin exacts a significant toll on health. Loss of eyesight is a major hazard. The World Health Organization estimates that half of the children in Africa, Asia and Latin America are permanently blinded each year from lack of vitamin A. Usually, the first signs of moderate vitamin A deficiency are night blindness and "dry eye."
