PRECIS This essay provides historical/theological analysis of the Roman Catholic approach to ecumenism that was made by Vatican II and in post-concillar documents on ecumenism. The essay studies in more detail the development of Roman Catholic ecumenical dialogue with Eastern Orthodox Churches. Special attention is given to the Orthodox perception of Catholic ecumenical efforts, the Orthodox understanding of ecumenism, and remaining theological, canonical, and administrative obstacles and problems for ecumenical union between Catholics and Orthodox.
