"Van Halen III," the CD that introduced former Extreme frontman and Malden native Gary Cherone as the band's third lead singer, isn't quite the kind of party-hearty manifesto that secured Van Halen's status as hard-rock heroes.
Tangled with stylistic departures and tempered by serious introspection, the debut of what Van Halen has called its "third and final incarnation" shows a band in transition, heading away from the guitar-driven power rock it helped to define and into more eclectic musical territory.
