The Gophers athletic department opened a public relations swing across Minnesota with stops in Moorhead and Alexandria on May 22. The main eventers were Tim Brewster, the new football coach, and Don Lucia, fresh from guiding his men's hockey team to a stirring NCAA first-round victory over vaunted Air Force Academy.

There were people gathered before the start of the Moorhead event. Greg Troland, a former Gophers basketball player and dedicated booster, visited the cash bar on arrival, saw some friends and wandered into the group.
