The question marinated for years in Laurie Halse Anderson's imagination.
What form would her first tattoo take?
It had to vibrate.
It had to bring to the surface something that echoed far beneath her skin.
And then, the answer came.
Last month, the 45-year-old author pushed back her sleeve and exposed her wrist to a tattoo artist, who injected brown pigment in the shape of an Old English word, "Hwaet."
Pronounced "HWET," the word is the first one appearing in the epic poem, "Beowulf." Roughly translated, it means, "Listen here."
