With the two unbeatable goals of revitalizing lower Manhattan and exposing the work of new independent film-makers, the inaugural Tribeca Film Festival kicked off Wednesday, May 8, 2002. Backed by the star power of Robert De Niro and partner Jane Rosenthal, and organized by his company, Tribeca Productions, the festival also aims to reinforce New York City as a film-making mecca, and connect members of the film industry and the public.
