The author James Fenimore Cooper was born in Burlington, New Jersey, on 15 September 1789, but grew up in Cooperstown in New York State. `The Last of the Mohicans' (1826), from which this extract is taken, was inspired by this frontier home, with its spectacular scenery and its population of settlers, trappers and Indian tribes. Cooper died in 1851.
