Cerium is distinguished from other elements for its ability to have a direct polymorphic transformation from one face-centered cubic (fcc) structure to another form with different density. An evaluation of the gamma to alpha hydrostatic compression pressure transformation generates plastic deformation and recrystallization. No intermediate phases were observed during the process, which was marked by beta forms during cooling.
