The Kharkov train station seethed with activity. Porters heaving giant suitcases shoved their way through the churning crowds. Passengers scurried about, buying tickets, checking and rechecking their luggage. Newsboys touted the latest headlines.

Zev Tannenbaum looked at his watch. His train wasn't scheduled to leave for another half-hour. He bought a newspaper, and perused the stories. A heavy box slammed into his leg. "I'm so sorry sir," apologized the young porter, disappearing into the crowd. "Watch where you're going!" Zev shouted after him.
