The gridiron is becoming a new scientific laboratory, as football helmets fitted with the type of chip that gives the Nintendo Wii its motion-sensing magic help doctors study concussions. Simbex, a Lebanon, N.H., company that develops technologies focused on sports injuries and rehabilitation, has integrated motion- detecting accelerometer chips from Analog Devices Inc. into football helmets that have been worn by hundreds of college and high school players.
