Tolerant Couplings
Because they transmit power from a driver force to a driven work-producing element, power transmission couplings have been integral to industrial development. The first description we have of a flexible coupling is a simple universal joint developed by the Greeks. Modern coupling began with Jerome Cardan, who devised a coupling made of two yokes, a cross, and four bearings. Around 1650, Robert Hooke adapted this joint to a rotating shaft in a clock drive.
