Tissue-culturing plants on cornstarch.

About 2 pages (579 words)

Agricultural Research, July 1st, 1995

Agricultural Research Service horticulturist Ingrid M. Fordham has developed a new cornstarch-based gelling mixture for tissue-culturing plants. The mixture is a combination of cornstarch and the gellan gum, Gelrite. Tests show that the mixture outperforms and costs less than the more commonly used gelling agent, agar. Fordham has used the mixture to tissue-culture different types of apples, raspberries and pears.

An ARS horticulturist has formulated a new gelling mixture, made primarily from cornstarch, that can be used successfully for tissue-culture of apples, pears, and raspberries.
