* Perhaps the person most responsible for alerting the world to the plight of Africa's gorillas was Dian Fossey (1932-1985). Fossey was a U.S. zoologist who was inspired by the work of Dr. Louis Leakey in Africa. In 1966, she went to the Virunga Volcanoes in Rwanda to study mountain gorillas. She stayed for most of the next 19 years.
