Last month, the Moon was involved in a pair of eclipses that offered some insight into the shape of the Moon's orbit and some effects of that shape, and not just with regard to eclipses. The solar eclipse was an annular eclipse, a solar eclipse that follows the same sequence as a total solar eclipse, with the exception being that at mid-eclipse the disk of the Moon does not entirely cover the Sun, leaving a ring of "fire" around the Moon.
