Now that President Bush, with the stroke of a pen, has granted cabinet status to the word "homeland," perhaps we should bring our most patriotic lyrics into full conformity.
We could sing, "God bless America, my homeland sweet homeland."
We could end the national anthem with "o'er the homeland of the free, and the homeland of the brave."
Or we could revise Woody Guthrie: "This homeland is your homeland, this homeland is my homeland."
