IT IS a sad irony that more people will now know John Webster as the darkly blood-obsessed young animal-torturer in Shakespeare in Love than as the darkly blood-obsessed writer of two of the Jacobean stage's most famous plays: The White Devil and The Duchess of Malfi. Perhaps it makes sense that today's stressed-out audiences are more willing to escape to a couple of hours of Shakespearean pleasantries with Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow than to endure an evening of doomed love, bloody corpses and bestial madness.
