"Principia Scriptoriae" is persuasively acted and directed at the Studio Theatre, but I can't pretend that this play by Richard Nelson isn't grim indeed. Grim and strangely lopsided. Nelson doesn't shy away from big challenges-grant him that. In the course of his drama, set in a repressive Latin American country, he ponders the role and obligations of the writer. He bemoans the political exploitation of artists. He marvels at the ability of literature to sustain human beings in times of pain and persecution.
