How about Lyman Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, published in 1900? Baum went on to write a dozen or more Oz books, but it remained for the first one, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, to be the most popular--the one that became a movie in 1939 and resonated with the entire world. It still does!
My mother read it to me before I could read it for myself. I readily admit that it quickly passed out of my literary realm, replaced by Treasure Island, Porto Bello Gold, Tom Swift and His Motorcycle, The Boy Allies series, the Hardy Boys mysteries, and anything Rudyard Kipling wrote about India. ...
