ALTHOUGH I haven't read John Updike'sThe Witches of Eastwick, I could easily tell that the mess of the same name I was watching on screen could have little to do with it--something other reviewers have since confirmed. The script is by Michael Cristofer, author of the dreadful screenplay for Falling in Love and the fearfully posturing, abominably hollow, Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Shadow Box.
