ALTHOUGH I haven't read John Updike'sThe Witches of Eastwick, I could easily tell that the mess of the same name I was watching on screen could have little to do with it--something other reviewers have since confirmed. The script is by Michael Cristofer, author of the dreadful screenplay for Falling in Love and the fearfully posturing, abominably hollow, Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Shadow Box. The film was directed by another Australian, George Miller, who, in the Mad Max series, proved himself a lively punk-action director, but who appears to have scant affinity...
