Steve snapped awake, instantly alert, listening. Wind tore around the corners of the old log cabin where he slept, testing the door, shaking the roof. Or was it the wind? Two nights ago when a giant tree blew down and smashed the cabin's chimney, he had thought it was the wind. He had heard the crash of the big stones thudding against the cabin.
But tonight it was a voice that awakened him, screaming through the darkness. Stiff with terror, he hid under the bedcovers unable to run for the door that led to his mother in the adjoining house.
