The Teutonic Order was established in 1190 at the seige of Acre when it was apparent that the dominant knights Templar and knights Hospitalers failed to address the needs of German knights. The Teutonic Order decided to establish crusades against the Lithuanian pagans in the Baltic in 1238. Through the Baltic crusade, the German knights were able to showcase their military superiority over the pagans and establish a new order of chivalry among the Baltic's 'Ministeriale' class. By the mid 1400s, however, the Teutonic Order found it difficult to find financial support to continue their crusades...
