There are now 80 days left in the current fiscal year. When Gov. Weld came into office, he said the state had a $850 million deficit. Now, an additional shortfall of $170 million has been announced. In 3 1/2 months, less than $250 million in solutions have actually been implemented. A tax that would have raised $30 million this year and $170 million next year has been repealed. The estimated amount of money to be saved by a furlough of state employees has been reduced by $25 million, and the money that is saved may be saved for only a few months.
